Since 1982, Supporting Older People (SOP) has been a cornerstone of hope and connection in the Harrogate and Knaresborough district. This dedicated charity was established to address a pressing issue in our society: the loneliness and isolation experienced by many older individuals. Over the years, SOP has worked tirelessly to make a difference in the lives of older people, creating opportunities for meaningful companionship, fostering a sense of community, and improving overall well-being.

At the heart of SOP’s mission lies its befriending service, which matches volunteers with older people who may feel lonely or cut off from society. These one-to-one relationships often blossom into lasting friendships, providing a friendly face and a vital source of emotional support. For many, these connections are life-changing.

In addition to its befriending initiative, SOP organises various social activities and outings that unite older individuals. Events such as “Tea & Talk” afternoons and dining clubs provide a relaxed and friendly environment for people to connect, share stories, and build new relationships. Meanwhile, their group outings to local attractions offer a chance to explore and enjoy the region’s vibrant culture, all while making cherished memories.

The charity’s work is made possible by a small team of dedicated part-time staff, a passionate board of trustees, and an incredible network of volunteers. These individuals embody the spirit of compassion and generosity, giving their time and energy to ensure that SOP’s programs continue to thrive. Their combined efforts have a profound impact, touching the lives of countless older people in the community.

Supporting Older People also recognises that the issue of loneliness among older adults is complex and multifaceted. As such, they actively engage with local organisations, businesses, and community groups to raise awareness and foster collaboration. By building strong partnerships, SOP amplifies its impact and brings about positive change on a broader scale.

An important Partner is Promedica24, which, through its local business partner, Gary Derbyshire, helps raise funds and awareness for the great work the team at SOP does. Like SOP, Promedica24 tackles loneliness head-on by providing a live-in care service that combines care with companionship.

An up-and-coming fundraising event supported by Promedica24 is the Charity Golf Day at Knaresborough Golf Club.

If you like golf and want to support a great charity, it would be great to see you!

There are many ways to get involved with SOP’s mission, whether by volunteering, donating, or simply spreading the word. Every contribution, no matter how small, helps ensure that no older person in Harrogate and Knaresborough faces loneliness alone.
